Star Ocean 5 announced for PS3/PS4

#1

Star Ocean 5 is in development for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3, the latest issue of Famitsu reveals.

A release date is still unannounced, but the game is developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix.

Update 6:08 a.m.: More details have leaked via Famitsu. The game’s full title is Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness. It is set on the uncivilized planet of Feycreed, which is 6,000 light years away from Earth.

Currently revealed characters include:

  • Fedel Camus (voiced by Kaito Ishikawa) – The protagonist. He specializes at fencing, and protects the order of his village.
  • Miki Sorvesta (voiced by Nao Toyama) – The heroine. She is the protagonist’s childhood friend, and loves him like an older brother.
  • Lilia (voice actor unknown) – A girl who lost both her memories and emotions.

The magazine also has screenshots of a blonde swordsman and blue-haired witch participating in battle.

Battles are seamless and in real-time. Depending on the distance between you and the enemy, the way you attack changes, and pushing buttons consecutively will trigger combos.

In addition to traditional event scenes, there will also be “seamless events” such as those where enemies attack you. If the enemy apprehends your allies during these events, there will be branching outcomes.

Here’s the game’s staff:

  • Developer: tri-Ace
  • Character Designer: Akira “Akiman” Yasuda
  • Producer: Shuichi Kobayashi
  • Director: Hiroshi Ogawa
  • Lead Programmer: Yoshiharu Gotanda

Cross platform.

In 2015.

Yep, that’s a shame. Developers really need to abandon last-gen. Unfortunately, the PS3 version of multiplatform releases are still selling better in Japan.

#4

Very late gen RPGs are always the best so i don’t really mind.

Hopefully they go back to the craziness that was SO2. Now that was one feverishly designed game, and still fun as hell.

A girl who lost both her memories and emotions.

There hasn’t been a good Star Ocean since Till the End of Time, which is also one of my favorite games ever, so I’m very excited about this news.

Hype + 5

The title sounds stupid, and is indicative of the longstanding tradition of ridiculous Japanese game titles, especially for RPGs. It’s nice that it’ll take place between SO2 and SO3, since I haven’t played SO3 or SO4.

“[Having previously been in marketing] I decided to change positions and become a producer out of the belief that Star Ocean is worth staking my life and legacy on,” Kobayashi said. “For Star Ocean 5, I wanted the game to overtly take cues from Star Ocean 3 and draw its essence from that game.”

According to the producer, they’re not thinking about story downloadable content or a “full version” to be released later. “I sincerely don’t want to do anything with this game that’ll upset people even a little bit,” Kobayashi said.

They must have been legit shook by the reaction of SO4, lol.

Longstanding? I don’t know. Infinite Undiscovery is probably the only really ridiculous one. Integrity and Faithlessness is actually a pretty good title if they handle it properly.

Regardless they’re well far behind light novels in terms of ridiculous titles.

#9

I like it

Also, on an itemized list of things I care about in my games, the title is probably bottom of the barrel. Really a non-issue.

@archnemesis I added the images and video to the OP and cleaned up the formatting a bit (removing the periods you added).

#12

Thanks! How do you add a newline between the images? It usually concatenates them if I don’t put a character in between.

#13

Well, did you just paste the image url?

Using <img> tags makes Discourse wrap them in <p> elements and as well not treat them as links.

Edit: Looks like Discourse has a bug where it replaced the image links/tags in the code block… You can look at the edit history to the original version and see that using direct image links without the <img> tag is why the images are not separated.

#14

Thanks again! I’ll start using that instead of adding dots.

#15

Character faces look fantastic. Leaps and bounds better than the CGI Dolls from the last game.

Really makes me miss TtEoT. Maybe I’ll replay that. Eventually.

#16

The character designs still look like generic anime characters. That’s been a staple of the series, I know, but I’m getting bored of it.

#17

so the little girl is the childhood friend? poor kid

#18

I think the character designs are my favorite thing I’ve seen so far.

Wanna get a peek at the combat, tho

#19

Boobie witch is legit, though

#20

a character of checkered repute

#21

She’s called Drill Hair Witch Girl.
