WYL Games of the Year 2014

#21

Did you enjoy the Etrian Odyssey series or Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey?

#22

Havenā€™t played them yet. I like first person dungeon crawlers, but the art style and kinda lame voice acting turned me away.

#23

Iā€™m not a fan of chibified graphics, but thankfully I believe most of Persona Q is from a first-person perspective.

#24

Jesus i didnā€™t think there would be so much text in BD! So many party talks, so much text in the journal, bestiaries and item descriptions, good lord.

#25

Itā€™s a loooooooooooong game too.

So a proper JRPG I guess.

#26

Why the hell did i post that in this thread.

#27

I thought it was because I named it in my list.

  1. Might & Magic X: Legacy - Despite being a fan of all types of RPGs, I could never get into western dungeon crawlers. Might & Magic X changed that. It has a user friendly interface and modern features without removing any of the complexity. Diving into a huge world with a customized party is a great experience.

2. Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft - I have played loads of different collectible card games since I discovered magic 20+ years ago. Hearthstone is the first one I can see myself continuing playing for a longer period.

3. Destiny - I poured many hours into this shooter even though it has obvious flaws and an incomplete story. The core mechanics are solid enough to make it worthwhile anyway.

4. Legend of Grimrock 2 - Iā€™m only a few hours into this and if I had more time it would probably rank higher. The first game was my GOTY 2012.

5. Sid Meierā€™s Civilization: Beyond Earth - Highly addictive and satisfying until I noticed all the minor flaws. I hope we get an expansion soon that addresses its issues.

6. Shin Megami Tensei IV - Another solid dungeon crawler.

7. The Blackwell Epiphany - The fifth and final entry in this great adventure game series managed to tie everything together and end on a high note.

8. The Banner Saga - I loved the setting and the difficult choices. The combat system never resonated with me though.

9. Threes! - A great puzzle game that everyone should have on their phone or tablet.

10. Monument Valley - An artsy puzzle game with Escher-inspired art that is pretty and interesting. It is rather easy and thankfully doesnā€™t overstay its welcome.

So Iā€™ve given this some thought and Iā€™m not really sure I can do a list this year, which is kinda sad.

Itā€™s been a very poor year for games.

My GOTY is Wolfenstein: The New Order. Thatā€™s easy enough.

After that, though, thereā€™s just a bunch of games I sorta enjoyed but canā€™t be fucked to put them in hierarchy - TLOU: Remastered, Shadow of Mordor, Far Cry 4, Valiant Hearts, MGS Ground Zeroes and Titanfall.

Edit: Should also add The Evil Within.

#30

Dota is still good.

#31

Based on games Iā€™ve actually playedā€¦

Destiny (some hundreds of hours and still playing regularly)
Shadow of Mordor
Hearthstone

#32

Playing the mission where you steal the stealth choppers. Not seeing why this game is so universally loved. Plays like any other single player FPS.

#33

Iā€™m hoping you mean old FPS, because thatā€™s what Wolfenstein did best. It brought back old design tenets and updated them to contemporary standards, which is no easy feat.

#34

Like what

#35

The semi open level designs with more than one path, secret rooms, more than two weapons equipped, mostly player driven combat encounters, dedicated stealth mechanics including a really awesome silenced handgun, unapologetic gore, the narrative with a very strong antagonist that is also unapologetically evil rather than morally ambiguous or politically motivated, bosses and semibosses, super Nazi robots, and probably more. And even after all that, itā€™s a game with strong characters, a good story, and most importantly an MC thatā€™s actually a poet on the inside.

#36

You forgot the most important part: you can see your feet!

#37

Huh, I thought we didnā€™t have this thread. Guess I missed it.
