It’s so frustrating that the region which is least representative of wider gaming trends gets the best and most open disclosure of sales numbers.

Look at that shit. It’s Japan. It’s a curio of a retail zone.

Destiny, PS4 lead sales boost for US games biz in Sept - NPD

The NPD Group’s report for September is in, and while overall software (including PC) declined 35 percent to $501.6 million, hardware sales climbed by 136 percent to $432.7 million, helping to bring the industry sales total to $1.1 billion for the month, or up two percent. Accessories increased 33 percent as well, coming to $189.5 million.

With the new hardware continuing to attract customers, it would appear that new purchasers of the PS4 or Xbox One flocked to Bungie’s Destiny or sports titles from EA like Madden or FIFA. Shadow of Mordor also performed well, placing fifth on the top ten chart, while Nintendo continues to see global success with Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. In a separate press release, Nintendo noted that Smash Bros. 3DS sold 705,000 units in September (135,000 of which were sold digitally through the Nintendo eShop); this led to over 140,000 units of the 3DS family of systems being sold (an increase of 55 percent over sales in August).

Destiny in particular was huge for Sony, as the company noted that PS4 has been the lead platform for the game in terms of units sold through October 4. Additionally, while NPD doesn’t provide specific digital sales yet, Sony boasted that Destiny helped the PlayStation Store set a new record for the month. And the limited-edition Destiny PS4 bundle drove PS4 hardware sales to its biggest month in 2014 - Sony said PS4 hardware numbers “nearly tripled” those of August.

“September 2014 was a record-breaking month for PlayStation’s digital business, thanks in large part to the success of Destiny,” said Eric Lempel, vice president of Sony Network Entertainment International. “Last month’s PlayStation Store revenue increased nearly 90 percent compared with Sept. 2013. Working closely with Activision and Bungie, we wanted to make the launch of Destiny a special experience for PlayStation fans. We’re thrilled to see this high engagement from PS4 and PS3 owners.”

NPD industry analyst Liam Callahan added, "The launch of Activision-published and Bungie-developed Destiny in September 2014 proved successful in a number of ways: year-to-date through September data it is the top-selling video game on a unit basis, making it the most successful launch of the year so far as well. But an even more prestigious feat was the fact that Destiny had the best launch month of all-time for any new IP in video game software.”

While software sales were down quite a bit compared to last September, Callahan remarked that it’s not a truly fair comparison: "It is important to note that September 2013 was the best performing September on record for new physical video game software sales, driven by the launch of Grand Theft Auto V, therefore making for difficult comparisons for this September to last.”

Here’s the NPD’s top 10 chart for September:

Report: Mobile to become gaming’s biggest market by 2015

A new report has named 2015 as the year in which the value of the mobile games market will exceed that of consoles, making it the industry’s most lucrative sector.

The Quarterly Global Games Market Update, from Newzoo, pins the total estimated value of mobile games at $25 billion for the year, a huge leap of 42 per cent from the total value in 2013. That rise, the company believes, is not only thanks to the sudden rush of revenues from vast developing markets like India, but also the continuing performance of markets like North America and Asia, which some had predicted to have reached saturation point.

“With the public release of these new forecasts, Newzoo is deliberately countering the sentiment aired in recent months that the mobile gaming market is becoming saturated in mature Western markets, especially the US,” said analyst Vincent van Deelen in a note accompanying the research.

“This is simply not the case. We are also emphasizing that the recent results of individual high profile companies such as Rovio, King, DeNA and GREE are not necessarily indicative of the state of the mobile market as a whole. It is not in our interest to inflate market figures, but the hard facts have forced us to adjust our estimates upward. We have maintained our year-on-year growth rates toward 2017, ultimately leading to a $40Bn+ market in 2017.”

With its combination of both organic and cannibalistic market growth, mobile continues to represent both threats and opportunities to more traditional retail avenues. Whilst many publishers are making headway into mobile markets with separate publishing arms, acquisitions and companion apps, revenues for mobile’s biggest players are already dwarfing their console and handheld counterparts. Apple’s gaming revenues alone, for example, are predicted to total somewhere in the region of $4 billion for 2014 - somewhere around double that forecast for Nintendo.

For now, Apple remains the top dog in terms of mobile gaming income, edging out a predicted revenue total of $3 billion dollars for Google Play in 2014. That, says Newzoo’s Peter Warman, is down to the edge provided by the company’s tablet portfolio.

“In mature Western markets, we see the battle between iOS and Android shifting toward tablets,” said the Newzoo CEO. “In most of these countries, including the US, Android smartphones gross more revenues than the iPhone, but the iPad keeps iOS ahead in overall mobile game spending. Android tablets seem to be in the same position its smartphones were in 4 years ago: fragmented in terms of device specs and a lower share of game and average spending. Amazon’s Kindle Fire is an exception, scoring high on both KPIs, but for now the iPad maintains its lead, taking the lion’s share of tablet game revenues.”

Nintendo earnings improve, but Wii U and 3DS sales still slow

Nintendo earned 171.4bn yen (£981m) in revenue during the past six months, although ended with a total operating loss of 215m yen (£1.2m).

That figure is a vast improvement on the same time last year however, when Nintendo posted a far more dire 23bn yen (£133m) operating loss.

Despite the operating loss, Nintendo managed to post a profit of 14.3bn yen (£82.1). That’s because of positive exchange gains due to the depreciation of the yen.

Nintendo shipped 610,000 Wii U consoles worldwide between July and September, double what it did during the same timeframe last year.

The company pointed to the launch of Mario Kart 8 as a reason for its sales uptick, as well as last month’s launch of Hyrule Warriors.

But the company is still a way off of its Wii U hardware forecast. It has currently shipped 1.12m consoles worldwide since April - around a third of its 3.6m year target.

Nintendo has pointed to the upcoming launch of Smash Bros. Wii U and its amiibo figurine range as factors that will boost Wii U sales in the lead up to Christmas.

Worldwide, Wii U has now shipped 7.29m units to date in total. The console launched in November 2012.

3DS hardware numbers were down year-on-year, from 2.49m to 1.27m.

That’s despite the recent launch of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, which shot to 3.22m copies worldwide in less than a month.

Quirky life sim Tomodachi Life was also singled out for praise - it has now sold a total of 3.12m worldwide, following its Western release in June.

But the 3DS will get Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire in time for Christmas, Nintendo has reassured, while hardware sales will continue to be bolstered by the Japanese and Australian launch of the New 3DS and New 3DS XL.

Evil Within deserves it.

Also I’m considering getting a Wii U which I realise somewhat represents a u-turn on my previous position. But idc.

It’s a decent system and it complements the PC well since there is almost no overlap between the two systems.

That was my thinking, plus I’m buying a flat and it’d be cool to have some local co-op stuff to play when shorty moves in etc.

NPD: NBA 2K15 is #1, hardware and accessory sales up

Xbox One and PS4 sales add up to a great first year

The NPD results for October are in and marked a successful first year of sales for the Xbox One and PS4.

“October 2014 marks the first 12 months of sales for the Xbox One and PS4; and after the first year, these consoles have had a great start as cumulative sales are currently over 70 percent higher than the combined first year totals of Xbox 360 and PS3,” said The NPD Group’s Liam Callahan.

“Hardware sales of eighth generation consoles represent close to 80 percent of dollar sales this month driving overall consoles sales to increase by 186 percent over October 2013.”

When it came to games NBA 2K15 took the chart top spot. The Evil Within was the highest-selling first month of sales for new survival horror IP, while Sunset Overdrive was the ninth-highest seller when sorted by SKU, rather than by title.

“Declines in software this month were driven by further declines of seventh generation software, which were not fully offset by gains in eighth generation consoles. New launch performance was also soft as games that launched this month sold 42 percent fewer units than the games that launched in October 2013. Despite, however, the declines in sales this month of seventh generation software, research from our quarterly Games Market Dynamics: U.S. showed that usage of seventh generation consoles across Q3’14 is still larger than that of eighth generation consoles.”

In accessories (gamepads, headsets/headphones, and video game point and subscription cards) sales were up 22 percent year-on-year thanks to the new consoles. Point and subscription card sales alone were up 24 per cent to achieve the best October on record for that category.

“Overall sales across hardware, new physical software, and accessories were essentially flat in October 2014 compared to October 2013. Hardware and accessory growth, at 59 percent and 22 percent, respectively, was enough to offset the decline in new physical software of 28 percent.”

Here’s the NPD top ten for October:
